Padel is one of the most popular sports today. A few years ago, hardly anyone knew about this sport, and now padel courts are popping up at a rapid pace. Padel is not a new sport, it is already existing for a long time. It was invented in the course of the 1960s in the Mexican city of Acapulco, but it was in Argentina where padel became very popular and where it is the second most popular sport after football. Around the year 2000, Spain became the epicentre of padel and is today the largest market in Europe for the sport. Combination of two sports
Padel is a combination of tennis and squash. The pitch is smaller than a tennis pitch and can be played with two or four people. Because of this smaller pitch, the game becomes more dynamic and more social as it is easier to communicate with the other players. A glass or metal cage is placed around the field, this ensures that the ball is never played out of the pitch. The walls are even part of the playing field and makes the game quicker and more intensive.
We think one of the reasons of this hype is the COVID-19 situation. As a lot of recreational indoor facilities were closed, padel was and is the ideal sports discipline for solving the need for exercise. You can play inside but also outside, in a cage and with max 4 people. In other words, it answers the need for social contact in a safe setting.
